Dalton Trumbo, a prolific screenwriter in 1940s Hollywood, is summoned by the House of Un-American Activities Committee to reveal his Communist sympathies and cronies. Trumbo remains silent and convinces his friends to do the same to protect their rights as American citizens. He is held in contempt of Congress and sentenced to prison. Upon his release, he finds that he and his friends have been blacklisted, as the studios have been coerced by the government not to hire those considered threats. Trumbo and his family move out of their comfortable home and he takes a job writing low level genre fare for little money and no credit. He gets work for other writers on the "Hollywood Ten" blacklist at the same company. Trumbo then hands in a script for THE BRAVE ONE that wins an Oscar, but when the pseudonym he uses cannot be found, suspicions rise and it becomes known he wrote it. Kirk Douglas approaches him to work on SPARTACUS, and Otto Preminger soon follows with EXODUS. When Preminger reveals that the movie is written by Dalton Trumbo, Douglas follows suit. Trumbo reveals he wrote THE BRAVE ONE and hopes this brings an end to the devastation felt by the victims of the Hollywood blacklist as the government proved to have accomplished nothing other than putting people out of work.
