A young Manhattan chef Samir rediscovers his heritage and his passion for life through the enchanting art of cooking Indian food Today's Special is the story of Samir (Aasif Mandvi), a first generation American born from parents native to the country of Inia. Living in the shadows of his deceased older brother, Samir aspires to become the head chef of a trendy bistro in Manhattan. Plans go awry when he is passed up for promotion. The head chef tells Samir he is too mechanical and methodical in his cooking, and lacks feeling and flair. Samir quits his job to persue his dream by moving to Paris and working as an apprentice for a world-renowned chef. The dream is short-lived though by his father's health, and Samir is forced to take over the family business, a seedy rundown Indian restaurant in Queens.
