This is the story of former drug addict Dimitri Mugianis, who got clean years before using ibogaine, an isolated alkaloid from the iboga plant of West Africa. After consuming this medicinal plant Dimitri ended his long cycle of self abuse and drug abuse. The film picks up Dimitri's tale as he becomes a "provider" of ibogaine treatments which have to be done secretly or "underground" because ibogaine is a Schedule I substance. The first half of the film (not easy to watch!) takes us into that world, with its very interesting characters--most of them strung out on opiates. The point is well made: ibogaine therapy is not easy for the participants. The medicine experience involves hours of visionary 'tripping', inability to move (ataxia), nausea and emotional discharge. The climax of the film points clearly to the fact that Dimitri is in over his head performing these underground treatments. Negroponte's film, after the climax, completely changes. We follow Dimitri on a shamanic journey in which he succeeds in re-inventing himself. In Gabon, West Africa, Dimitri is initiated into the spiritual system called Bwiti, which has iboga as its sacrament. His initiation into the Bwiti results in a new name "Mobengo", and a new confidence about his working with ibogaine. At times the film is so real that it leaves you squirming in your seat.
