This sincere but curiously unemotional quasi-autobiogra¬phy from Louis Malle is set in January 1944 during the German Occupation of France. After spending the holidays with his mother, 12-year-old Julien (Gaspard Manesse) is sent to a provincial Catholic boarding school, where he is brighter than all of his classmates except one—Bonnet (Raphael Fejto), a new arrival who, like Julien, has a great love of books. Their friendship grows and eventually Julien learns Bonnet's secret: he is one of three Jews being hid¬den from the Gestapo by the school's gutsy cleric, Fr. Jean (Philippe Morier-Genoud). Based on a childhood trauma experienced by producer-director-writer Malle, AU REVOIR LES ENFANTS is a deeply personal project that he has long wanted to make. Unfortunately, the film fails to generate the emotional power one would expect from a film dealing with Holocaust-related personal tragedy. Still, the film hit home with many audiences, winning the Golden Lion at the 1987 Venice Film Festival, and earning two Oscar nominations—Best Foreign Film and Best Screen¬play. The videotape is available in dubbed and subtitled (French into English) versions.
