The last time we went to this theater, we dressed appropriately, but were still so cold that we had to cover everyone in our row with an emergency space blanket from our car.
We were in one of the smaller (upper) theaters and patrons in the row below us were heating themselves by burning pieces of the seats in a small brasier. Other people in the rows above us had Irish Coffee and we all shared.
So in true community spirit, it's a good place to see a movie (since they are the last place in the continental US that accepts only cash); bring cash, a thermos of Irish Coffee and your space blanket.
So it seems that the concensus is that everyone likes the theater and the films shown there. The problem is the heating of the theater?
So there are two solutions as I can see it: Bring extra clothes or blanket to keep you warm. Or, don't go to this theater.
There are lots of theater venues (plays) where it is very cool or even chilly, dress appropriate and enjoy your film...
Me and my husband have been going to this theater for over 7 years and we absolutely love it. We always get great selection of films and a wonderful staff that always greets us. I highly recommend it.
We've always encountered friendly staff-seems they know true film lovers. Cleaner, warmer, and brighter? Then they'd be critiqued as 'sanitized'. Enjoy the culture and the setting-it's one of a few true 'movie houses' left...if you're scruples and entitlement will let you.
We love this cinema with its pricing and selection of movies. I can't remember ever bundling up for a cold theater; but then we don't heat our home at night and must be acclimated for their winter movies. At some cinemas, we lose out to the hearing impaired. Here with temperature it may be the other way around. Nor do I remember ever encountering rudeness. Perhaps someone there had a bad day.
i agree with the above reviewer in that the west newton theater does always have a wonderful selection of films. however, it has become impossible to enjoy viewing a film while sitting in your down jacket zipped up with the hood on due to the freezing temperatures. further insulting is the fact that when one requests a little heat, you are treated poorly and generally unresponded to. one would expect from a theater with a fantastic volume of filmgoers, in this community, a better response to a patron's concern.
the rudeness is over the top. what happened to the days when you could view a film comfortable while your jacket is resting on your chair behind you. a friend recently told me that she brings a blanket when she frequents this theater. at these prices, or truly at any price, the west newton theatre should be responsible for keeping their building at comfortable temperatures, and being open to concerns. often times, once you do complain, the heat is only then turned on, and somewhere halfway through a film, you are able to thaw a bit. this is usually only after asking that the heat be turned up, and that has to happened sometimes two or three times. it's completely unacceptable. and now to make matters worse, the floors are often filthy and sticky and the chairs have begun to break down. my arm rest collapsed underneath me throughout my last experience there. i always took pride int he fact that i lived so near to such a wonderful art house theater, bringing great film as well as speakers to its community. i wish they would heat and clean up their act, or at least offer an apology about the situation instead of seeing you, the good, paying and loyal paying patron as the problem!
This theater always offers a wonderful selection of films. It was one of my regular destinations for many years. However, I had some unpleasant experiences, and now it is one of the last theaters of it's kind, on my list. The ticket price is very high, even for a matinee, and the senior discount age seems to be edging up. The theater above the balcony level is miserably uncomfortable, and one winter morning (Dec., 2008), the heat never came on. I find the place pretty shabby and depressing. This review is based on my last visit being a year ago.
