A former movie palace, the Del Mar now has a beautiful downstairs grand auditorium retaining the former glory of the original, while the upstairs balcony has been converted into two, side by side stadium seating auditoriums. What's not to like? Santa Cruz is unique for a town of it's size, boasting 7 screens devoted mostly to independent programming. Between the Del Mar and the Nickelodeon (which runs the Del Mar) this part of the central coast has had 40 years of exceptional film programming and the community is richer for it. -
While some would call this old theater "renovated", others would call it GUTTED. What was once a glorious movie-palace is now a modernized cineplex with it's insides carved up into miniature versions of its bigger, former self. The action movie sound-track playing in the next theater often bleeds through to your quiet, brooding French art movie. Some screens are stained while others seem to have holes. Humph! Everyone's a critic! -
I love this theater. It was an old theater renovated and restored to its former glory with well-deserved upgrades: it boasts stadium seats so there isn\'t a bad seat in the house and all the seats I have sat in were all consistently comfortable.\n\ nThey also use real butter for their popcorn for those whom like butter, and the staff is generally pleasant.\n\nI wish more kiddie movies played here so I could go here more often.
