I live in Durham, and I frequently choose to drive the 25 miles or so to the Galaxy rather than see the same movies in the "arty" theaters closer to home. Why? Convenient parking. Friendly, courteous staff. Tempting concessions stand. Comfortable theaters. And, of course, outstanding film selection. Maybe I've just not been there on the right days, but I've experienced no problems with projection or with competing noises. The theater has been around a while, and perhaps a little renovation wouldn't hurt, but it's neither dirty nor decrepit. The Galaxy is a true treasure for the Triangle's grown-up moviegoers who want something a bit more engaging than 21 JUNK STREET or TRANSFORMERS: REVOLT OF THE RIDICULOUSLY EXPENSIVE TOYS. The corporate multiplexes will get by on their own. The Galaxy is a treasure that all serious moviegoers should support and nurture.

While this is only one of a handful of venues that caters to independent films, it is on the decline, as the number of film related mechanical problems is on the rise. Last fall, we had a film sprocket failure that caused the film to stop and melt in front of our eyes. We were given free passes or our money back, but that doesn't really cover the gas, concessions and time to come again to see the same film. In 2008 Galaxy leased their parking lot for a political rally next to the building, which included a really loud band that disrupted the movie we were watching a lot. When I addressed it with the manager, I got looked at like 'What's the problem with you?' The fact of the matter was we paid a lot of time and money to come across town to see a movie, and the experience sucked. The only message we could take away from this, is the owner and manager must just not care. The projector lamp issue seems to be getting worse, and makes me wonder if the theater is in jeopardy of closing, or the owner just being cheap and greedy. We've voted with our wallets, and have been patronizing other venues. The Raleigh Grande has recently started booking more independent films, which we applaud, and now consider one of our 'new' theaters. Galaxy - Don't bite the hand that feeds you.

The Galaxy really needs to change their projection light bulbs more often. We have stopped seeing movies there because we've sat through too many films that were so dark you could barely see the actors' faces. We later saw these movies elsewhere and the film was well-lit and clear.
Galaxy, please start changing your projection bulbs when they start to dim! Everything else about this theater is great, and we'd like to enjoy movies there again. -
We LOVE this theater. Great selection of films, very comfortable seats with much more leg room than more recently built theaters, and it's great to be able to get wine/ beer/ mochas/ lattes/ teas/ organic chocolates and cookies (plus the traditional stuff) from the concessions. Prices are reasonable, the staff is friendly and helpful, and the crowds tend to be slightly older and very engaged in the films. Even the limited graffitti in the restroom is literate and entertaining. It's a great and welcome alternative to the cookie cutter theaters and movies in the area.

The Galaxy is one of a handful of theatres in the Triangle showing independent films. Reasonable ticket and concession prices, with beer and wine offered. No stadium seating, but smaller and generally respectful crowds.
