I started seeing the poster for You Again about a week ago, yet hadn't seen a trailer for it on television, no radio ads. The movie comes out tomorrow, and I still haven't seen one advertisement. Now I know why. You Again has been thrown into the post-Labor Day movie dumping ground where unfunny comedies like this will disappear before anyone notices.
Kristen Bell (who is really cute, and that's about all I can say about her) plays Marni, an ugly duckling who has grown up to become a successful PR VP. She returns home to find that her brother is about to marry JJ, her high school nemesis, the girl that tortured her and gave her the nickname that still stings. Marni's mom also learns that JJ's aunt is HER nemesis. And non-hilarity ensues.
This movie is just not funny. The script yanks every cliche out of the handbook it can, and if I want to see another group of people have a food fight or fall into a pool, I'll rent a better movie that has those things in it. There's nothing the actors can do but look like deer in the headlights of this runaway unfunny train. And no offense to Betty White, but putting her in this movie feels like stunt casting. Unfortunately, slogging through this movie felt a lot longer than her career.
