Yes Man Movie Reviews
User reviews on Yes Man
Yes Man is a film that doesn’t seem to fully explore its intriguing idea, but provides some laughs nonetheless. Apparently the story about a guy who decides to say yes to everything is based on a book where the author really did that for a while. I’d love to know more about the real story, because there are a lot of times in Yes Man where I felt like “OK, it would NOT work out this well to say to everything. They do show Carrey getting into some embarrassing situations, but because it’s a light comedy they don’t really get into how insane it could really get. It’s not so much “What would it be like if somebody decided to say yes to everything?†as it is “what would it be like if a Jim Carrey movie character decided to say yes to everything?†But again there are some surprising situations that come up and Carrey’s as funny as ever. Let’s face it, Carrey’s fans don’t want to see him moping around in The Number 23 (a terrible film, I agree). They want to see him bouncing off the walls, and they haven’t had a lot of chances to do that since maybe Bruce Almighty five years ago. So maybe Carrey shouldn’t say yes to everything, just movies like this.
Jim Carrey is back to playing a funnyman in Yes Man. Although not as slapstick as his movies from an earlier decade he does seem to being trying to go back to his roots.. And since it is a comedy with Jim Carrey you can expect quite a few laughs. But it just isn’t as funny as it could be. There is a good message in the movie about a positive attitude and trying new things but it seemed a little on the subdued side. It’s also very predictable and is told through a series of little caricature scenes that you basically see in the previews.
Director Peyton Reed has brought other off beat comedies to the silver screen like The Breakup and Down With Love, which were two movies that were not that great in my opinion, so maybe his comedies just don’t resonate that well with me in general. What is better than the comedy is the romance between Carrey and Zooey Deschanel’s character Allison. She is rather funny and quirky and the budding love is very cute and adorable and the chemistry is believable. This movie is based on a non fiction book so the thought of someone actually doing this, saying yes to everything for a year, is pretty crazy but good on them.
There are a few laugh out loud funny scenes but most of the movie is more of a chuckle. I did find in entertaining and would suggest it to anyone that really likes Jim Carrey movies.
