I was very disappointed in this movie but the actress who played Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfield) was amazing. That was the reason why I watched the whole movie.
What a disappointment this movie was! I'm a big fan of the original and couldn't wait to see this remake. I shoulda waited. Bridges performance was a one note bore. I don't know what all the fuss was about? Every line was delivered with the same lethargic unintelligible manner. Couldn't tell if he was happy, sad, excited or glad. A big zero. Damon gave a decent imitation of Glen Campbell but nothing special. To top it off the score was boring. As Cogburn races to save Matty's life the musical score was much like a funeral waltz that was so dull I kinda hoped that both characters would have died. A fun and exciting movie was turned into quite the snooze fest. The only redeeming quality of the film was the recasting of the horse trader/merchant whom Matty wants to sell back the 2 ponies her Daddy bought from him and whom she holds liable for the theft of her Daddy's horse, while in his care. The part was played by the very same actor in the very same part as from the original film (my apologies for not recalling his name). Watching him again was a delight and made me expect that this was going to be a great, fun film. It wasn't! Skip it!
Funny , serious, Great acting, would see it again.
Just got in from seeing True Grit, Why! Why!! Why!!! Is Hollywood so hard up for original ideas that they are going to BUTCHER every Great movie from the past! The best part of this movie was the end... you know the part when you get to get up and leave....and being their with my lovely wife.
Mattie Ross(Hailee Steinfeld) was the best part of the movie, They Butchered dialog, added, changed and deleted scenes, made Rooster (Bridges) into a babbling drunk and Texas Ranger LaBoeuf (Matt Damon) I just could not buy into it. Where the heck did they come up with that ending... very disappointing.
Excellent movie, with the Dude filling in for the Duke, and not a bad job I might add. No one could replace Wayne, or Duvall as Ned Pepper for that matter, but they did a great job in this contemporary version of a classic western. Matt Damon should never be in a western again unless he gets shot in the first scene (Gunsel) but the rest did a great job. Please God more westerns before I die.
Westerns are a true favorite of mine, and I like them"real". The new "True Grit" did not disappoint.
I never saw the original with John Wayne (I was never a big fan ... hard to believe, right?).
The acting by both Jeff Bridges and Hailee Steinfeld was exceptional. The dialogue was impressive with professional delivery.
What an acting "find" Hailee Steinfeld is. her acting and delivery were extremely impressive.
If you like Westerns you'll love this one. I believe you'll rate it in your top 10.
This movie was entertaining. It wasn't necessarily a must see in the theaters, but you wont leave feeling ripped off. It's not filled with a ton of action. Mainly some great dialog between Hailee Steinfield, Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon.
As is gainfully expected from the Coen Bros. this flick is definitely up to par. It's a highly genuine period Western, with excellent performances by Jeff Bridges and the break-out barely 14-yr-old Hailee Steinfeld (she was 13 while filming). It is a great campfire kind of story, and much more comedic than I expected, though humor is appropriately employed- it is NOT a "dramadey". My only warning is this: do NOT go into this movie expecting a sequel to "No Country for Old Men," because, while set in the west and mildly involving a similar theme of "everyday person vs criminal" & the timeless "morality greyness", they are NOT similar films beyond that. "True Grit" is great, nonetheless.
In my opinion, True Grit is the best western film made since Tombstone...
If you want to see a good (great) western go see Jeff Bridges in True Grit. Saw it last night and was not disappointed.
The number one goal of a western should be to make it real – none of the usual Hollywood fluff – and this movie delivered. Bridges and the girl deserve Oscars. Matt Damon-not as much-but good.. Great casting and greater dialog. I’m ready to see it again - now.
