Tree of Life Movie Reviews
User reviews on Tree of Life
Saw this movie this weekend. The audience clapped at the end, because it FINALLY ended. The film is similar to "2001: A Space Odyssey" another movie I fell asleep to. A lot of pretty pictures from a bad storyteller. This stuff about deeper meaning is BS.
Should have seen anything else instead.
The synopsis presented here has NOTHING to do with Terence Malick's 2011 "Tree of Life"!!! Please change the description - 100% off!!!!
As a cinematic feat, Terrance Malick's impressionistic, autobiographical and transcendent "Tree of Life" is beautiful beyond words ... and yet the "story" is painful, and strange, the way life, and our inexplicable choices, and our memories tend to be painful and strange ...
Many people, perhaps most people, simply don't like Terrence Malick movies. The plot is usually non-linear and irrelevant, the dialogue slow and oblique, and the cinematography is filled with long, slow close-ups and wide panning shots edited together with a deliberately jumpy or jarring quality. The overall effect is more like a cinematic expressionistic painting designed to evoke a feeling than anything resembling a narrative. Tree of Life is no different, and is in fact an interesting example of Malick's work. Don't see this film if you are expecting an exciting story, or really any story at all, but do prepare to be absorbed into the lush world that Malick has created.
Beautiful cinematography and special effects. Plot was...not there. Clearly a vanity film by the big name participants. Some scenes had no bearing on the movie at all, I assume they were the "cool idea" of a Hollywood A-lister and got included for that reason. Not really worth seeing. Excellent theater, great venue with a nicely eclectic selection of movies. I have seen some of my best movies ever in this theater. This show however, while arty can't be recommended for that alone.
The previous "reviewer" must have expected Disney or some other Hollywood-aligned mindless fodder. Beyond cinema's traditional "suspension of disbelief", this Terrance Malick's film requires a bit of "giving oneself over" to absorb the deeper significances embedded within it's visual depth and gently cerebral lusciousness. IOW, "Cars2", it ain't...
When I saw the description of the movie, (In a mystical world of folklore, several individuals embrace in a race to find the Tree of Life, said to give immortality, fertility, and other supernatural powers), I thought, "Really sounds cool." When I saw the movie preview, I didn't get it, but I thought, "The description makes it sound cool, probably just a bad preview." I went to the theater and I actually walked out after an hour. Maybe the movie gets better? I was bored to tears. If you are on the fence, skip it. If the preview REALLY calls to you, this is probably just your kind of movie, and I'm a guy who doesn't get this movie (but I love movies with this kind of plot so it's odd I didn't get this).
Wish people had reviewed this movie, that is why I'm posting this.
