This film is a gritty look at life in working class Holland that pulls no punches. It centers aroud 3 friends who each have a dream of a better life. Two of the boys come from loving families that support their efforts to improve their lives through motorbike racing. One young man, who is fighting off his growing attraction to other men, comes from an unloving strict religious family. His Father delights in pointing out his shortcomings and punishing him with a beating for every infraction. Things are looking up for the boys when a wildly pretty gal with few scruples enters their lives and turns everything upside down. Life rapidly goes downhill when the talented leader of the group is permanently disabled as a result of a stupid accident on the highway caused by orange peels tossed from a car window. That scene was so realistic that I winced in pain as the boy hit the rock. The production values of the film are top notch, but be warned, there are several very explicit scenes of sex and violence that can be disturbing. They are true to the story, however, and not gratuitous at all. The one quibble I have with the film was the ending. I wasn't surprised by the disabled boys fate, but the other two boys and the girls endings didn't ring true to me. I will recommend this one to foreign film buffs.
