Iranian director Majid Majidi created this funny and appealing story of one man's mishaps. Despite its many episodes, the film has a flow; there is an inner rhyme to these incidents. The theme is perhaps specifically Islamic—it counsels the acceptance of whatever Allah decides to throw in your path, whether it's a bag of gold or a stumbling block. Karim, played by Reza Najie, loses his job as an ostrich wrangler. By accident, he becomes an illegal motorcycle cab driver for selfish urban professionals; trying to support his family, he gets a little greedy. Meanwhile, his children turn entrepreneurs of a sort, trying to turn the muddy cistern into a goldfish farm. This very droll movie suggests that an ostrich can be a bird of happiness; one fugitive creature is glimpsed in the neighborhood, leaving an egg or two or a feather as a sign it was there. One cannot argue with this living, breathing picture of the life of a poor man. Most things get spilled, some things get saved; accepting it is the essence of serenity.
