Actors did an excellent job of portraying Holmes and Watson as Arthur Conan Doyle presents them, however. . . .I found the movie a bit boring to the point of dozing off, which has never happened to me before.

Sorry, for me very disappointing and not worth the price of admission.

This movie was fun, fun, fun. I only realized how long it was when we walked out hungry.
I enjoyed the characters, the plot and the sometimes socially costly analytical skills of Holmes. The relationship of Holmes and Watson could not have been portrayed any better. It is possible to really see how they feel for each other. This relationship developed in some comical, and some poignant, moments between the two men as they sacrifice for each other.
I give a 5 star rating for a really entertaining movie. But, I then subtract one star because this film includes complete instructions on how to perform a satanic rite.
    So, 4 stars.

So many filmmakers would have turned this plot into yet another piece of new-age drivel; thank goodness that Guy Ritchie, it turns out, can do something other than marry and divorce up. He uses film and computer graphics to seamlessly create a thoroughly believable Victorian London, prods good actors to give excellent, three-dimensional performances (especially Jude Law as Watson), and leads the viewer down the plot's twisting garden path with minimal opportunity for skepticism, to a dénoument that gives full homage to Conan Doyle's immortal character. (Unless you think he's suggesting a homosexual relationship between Holmes and Watson, a prurient thought that speaks more about our present need for tittillation than it does of Victorian attitudes.)

Special effects are all the rage now, but Ritchie keeps a steady hand on them. He uses them to good effect (no pun intended) without allowing them to overshadow.

Really enjoyed this movie and thought the scenery and costums for that time period were done well. Reminds me of older England. Acting was very good and I would recommend this movie. Nothing like the 'old' movies, but had a hint of some of same type of quips, or the way they were presented. Those quips made me smile in remembering the old ones, but this was a complete different take on Sherlock Holnes. I would give it a 3 to 3 1/2 . Ann

Great flick!! 5 star. You will enjoy it. Well worth your time without a doubt. The red warning that appeared says I have to write 45 words min to get this posted. OK. It's Sherlock Holmes done right with a good modern cast, excellent script with lots of action and great directing. Do you need more?

I have never seen Sherlock Holmes in such good form. Robert Downey, Jr. was excellent, even if the character was a bit off the book version. I found this movie incredibly entertaining with great creativity. I would highly recommend it. My only complaint was that it was too long. Movies over two hours beging to drag and there was just a hint of that.

I would say 3.5 but someone else already rounded low so I'll average it up.
Downey and Law played interesting and rich characters. I didn't mind that Law's Watson was a bit more rough and tumble than the old films.
I did however mind that Irene was such a ditz. She's supposed to be a clever character, but she gets kidnapped and takes on a "distraction job." She's supposed to be an opera singer, yet her voice was just plain grating, and switched accents when it wasn't supposed to. Please see Carole Nelson Douglas's series starting with Goodnight Irene. Mary was a much better female character and wasn't even that important to the story!
Will agree with the others that I could have used a bit more deduction from clues and less running away from explosions/jumping out of windows, but I still enjoyed it mainly due to Downey and Law.

It is reviewed right, 3 stars and only because of the male stars in it. I got bored watching this movie and I have to admit it's been along time since I said or thought that. I will not buy this movie either and this is how I rate movies. Good enough to buy them or bad enough not too.

Obviously this isn't the Sherlock Holmes that we all remember. The sad fact is that people demand action and excitement these days and if they had kept the characters the same as the originals, people wouldn't have gone to see the movie in the droves that they have.
It is sad that Hollywood has focussed more these days on money and drawing in crowds of teenagers with their simple action packed plots, but who can really blame them? This is the world we live in now and they are just playing along with it. Or are they helping to promote it? That's an argument for another time.
While these were different new characters I still found them to be very entertaining. The plot was interesting and everything made sense in the end as it came together. There were some parts where it was hard to understand what they were saying due to rapid talking and poor english accents so go with a friend so you can compare what you hear.
I'd say that this is worth seeing. They did set the end up for a sequel but by revealing the bad guy kind of ruined it in advance for me so be prepared for that.
