I was very disappointed with this film and I do not recommend seeing it in the theaters. It pains me to say that because I absolutely loved the book and I love the actors that are in the film, however the movie was not good and I have to report the truth. Do not get me wrong, Johnny Depp was absolutely great and he did his thing but it seems that the director just relied completely on Depp to make the film good and it does not work that way, one person can not carry the whole movie. The film does not feel fluid and it does not come together well, even though all the actors do a great job, the director failed to make this film interesting and that is just sad.

This is a great film which flowed much smoother than Fear and Lothing.
The insight to Hunter S. Thompson was inspirational.
There are a lot of sub plots that show glimpses of what motivated Thompson to be who he was. Obviously some of the theater patrons were unprepared for some of the realities portrayed in the film, but for me they were presented well, with the right amount of humor.
It's worth seeing on the big screen, and I see it is being shown at the Cinerama, which would be a good venue. It is very visually impacting.

Johnny Depp stars in this adaptation of his friend Hunter S. Thompson's first novel. It makes sense, considering Depp was the one that found the manuscript when visiting Thompson's home and persuaded the writer to publish it. It's obvious that Depp gets Thompson, as evidenced by his performance in Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas. Here, in The Rum Diary, we get a subtler but no less offbeat Thompson.
Depp stars as Paul Kemp, a writer working at a newspaper in Puerto Rico in the late 1950s. He spends much of his time boozing it up with a photographer friend. He soon falls for a woman whose rich boyfriend wants to use Paul to write reports that will allow him to create luxury resorts on some pristine land. There's a moral dilemma here, but it's mostly about the drunken, drugged out detours Kemp takes with his compadres.
Thompson is not for everyone, but if he's for you, I think you'll like this. It's not as crazy as most of his stuff, but it has enough of his signature style to keep you entertained. Depp is as good as he usually is, and really understands how to play Thompson's characters. It's a nice, trippy diversion.

I did not like this film and I do not recommend seeing it in the theaters. I thought that the film is going to be different from anything I have seen, but it was not. Even though, Johnny Depp did an amazing job with the character, he could not save this film from being just another film about an intoxicated bozo. The characters in the film are underdeveloped and just pass by without really making an impact, I think the film lacked direction. It was fun to watch at first, but in the end I grew tired of all the drinking and the ending was terrible.

This is a film about an American journalist Paul Kemp, who takes a freelancing job in Puerto Rico, the film is directed by Bruce Robinson and stars Johnny Depp, Giovanni Ribisi and Aaron Eckhart. I was so looking forward this film and expecting it to be as good as the book, but I guess that never happens in Hollywood, the book is always going to beat the film. The film had no structure and it was a complete chaos, beautifully shot but still a chaos. Johnny Depp did a great job with the role, he was brilliant as always, the problem is that the character was not very interesting or likable(in the book it is). Overall, I would save my money and read a book instead of watching this film.
