The wizardly Hiyao Miyazaki’s beautiful, gentle animated entertainment for children. On a Japanese beach of today, 5-year-old Sosuke (voiced by Frankie Jonas) finds a magic talking goldfish with a human head. Ponyo (Noah Lindsey Cyrus) is happy to live in a bucket, but she sickens in captivity. A mystical rogue wave takes her back home. We learn that Ponyo’s father is a weary undersea wizard, Fujimoto (Liam Neeson). This former human seeks to heal the oceans with magic. Fujimoto was once the lover (or husband) of the colossal sea goddess Gran Mamare (Cate Blanchett). Ozu-worthy moments of enchantment appear throughout. Avoiding clear stories of good and evil, Miyazaki is both Buddhist and animist, telling of the opposition of creative and destructive forces. Richard von Busack

All hail Miyazaki! Over and over, THE favorite movies in our house. Forget 3D - this is what animation can be. Can't wait to take the kids to this one. Never gotten to see a Studio Ghibli the theaters before!

Absolutely amazing. I highly recommend it as a family movie, and the scenery and animation in it is... well, just amazing. The story is sweet and will make you laugh and leave the theater feeling happy. It is one of his more geared-to-children movies, but that doesn't make it any less enjoyable for adults.

This movie was fabulous! I took my nine year old daughter and her best friend. We went because it was the only kids' movie that they had not seen. We weren't expecting much, but we all loved it! What a pleasant surprise. Unfortunately, some of the recent G rated movies are so sappy that I have trouble sitting through them. It's great to know that good family movies can still be entertaining.

Ponyo is a delightful trip to the realm of joy and fantasy from within a little boy's mind, but from an adult perspective. It embellishes the finest that is within the human spirit, accompanied by some of the most beautiful music I have heard in an animation feature since Fantasia. It is certainly excellent for young children, but was obviously designed for the adult mind. It characterizes the best of what is human from a family perspective, while allowing the mind to soar to levels that are rarely seen in the theater these days. If you haven't lost your ability to feel deep emotions, and you haven't lost your ability to imagine delightful fantasy, then Ponyo is a lovely and uplifting way to spend your precious time.

Ponyo is a second-rate, half-baked animation feature that fails to live up to Hayao Miyazaki's name. From its cadre of insipid characters to its two-dimensional, pedantic, beat-you-over-the-head storyline about "achieving balance with nature," Ponyo drudges on for 100 minutes, insulting the viewer's intelligence a hundred times over.

Despite all its shortcomings however, Ponyo, I suspect, will be marketed like no other animation feature film in Studio Ghibli's history, given the company's new President, Koji Hoshino (former President of Walt Disney Japan). As a result, Ponyo will undoubtedly reach a greater number of Western audiences than it deserves. But trust me on this one. Do yourself a favor and stay away from Ponyo. The preview is infinitely better than the movie.
