Oz The Great and Powerful: An IMAX 3D Experience Movie Reviews
User reviews on Oz The Great and Powerful: An IMAX 3D Experience
This movie is only playing in certain cities in IMAX 3D but if you're lucky enough to be in one of those cities you should absolutely go ahead and buy the ticket. I mean really - it's effing stupendous on the IMAX! The story is mostly about images and settings and those are done with tremendously amazing detail in this format, one that only looks so-so in the regular format. I think Disney may have done this on purpose to get people to pony up for the higher priced ticket. The trick may have worked because everyone I saw it with said they would recommend it to their friends and family only for the IMAX 3D version. For those who think that the movie looks fake in certain parts in 2D I would agree. It looks much, much better in 3D and even better still in IMAX 3D. It's been 70 years since the original and I would say that it's better late than never for these amazing 21st century prequels.
This movie was a special treat for anyone who likes the whole idea of classic being revisited without being trampled upon. A lot of people will think that this is a remake of The Wizard of Oz, but it's really a completely separate story. The idea of the story is to see what led to the Wizard of Oz becoming the great Wizard that he is...except of course that everybody knows he's just a fake by now. I like the idea of showing him as a struggling magician named Oscar who wanted to make something out of himself. These desperate men really suit James Franco, lol. The movie is kind of expensive to see on IMAX 3D but if you're an absolute diehard Wizard of Oz fan or if you simply want to see what they tried to do with one of the most beloved movies and novels of all time, then it's worth the ticket price. If you're a fan of movies that are really big and epic, it's also worth the ticket price.
If you really (and I mean REALLY) want to swept up in the whole Oz spectacle and experience, then this is the movie to see in IMAX 3D. I saw the movie in regular format and it was 'eh' in terms of the visuals, but when you see it in IMAX 3D you really see it the way it was meant to be seen. The canvas is HUGE and the colors are AMAZING, and the movie just feels so much more epic than the way it was in 2D. If you like the whole twister scenario from the original you will love this one. The whole sequence that leads to Oscar ending up in Oz is very well done and looks smashing on the IMAX screen. This is probably one of the few movies that I would recommend seeing on IMAX after Avatar, Life of Pi, The Amazing Spider-Man, and Dark Knight Returns. It's all very fun and entertaining if you leave your logic at the door and just want to be swept away. Worth the extra 10 bucks imho.
