Overall, I thought that this year’s doc**entary nominees for the short doc**entary films lacked journalistic integrity. There was too much manipulation through music and emotional scenes. “Killing In The Name” was the most complicated topic and it also lacked objectivity and it oversimplified the issues it went out to clarify. I enjoyed a feel good doc**entary “Strangers No More”, I liked the story and it was heartwarming and inspiring. Again, the film lacked facts and it was way too emotional for a doc**entary. My favourite one was “Warriors of Qiugang” which was about Chinese villagers being poisoned by a factory. The film was based on facts and it had journalistic integrity. Another good one is “Sun Come Up” and it is about Carteret islanders being forced to relocate due to rising seas. I enjoyed the story even though it was a sad one and the film made me think. Overall, I think this year’s nominees lack in a lot of area but it is still worth seeing.
