STRINGS was decent--another campy romantic comedy that's great for date night or just to kill a few hours on a rainy night. Too bad the weather's been so nice.
Portman is quite charming in the film and once again keeps us wanting to see more of her. They say that in acting the hardest work is portraying the act of trying NOT to do something, i.e. trying not to cry--well she does a terrific job of trying not to fall in love. While we all know where the story will end up, she makes it worth watching.
Kutcher never ceases to amaze us with his acting--just when we think he has reached his plateau, he somehow manages to surprise us yet again by soaring to entirely new heights of pseudo Keanu Reeves-like reprehensibility.
The laughs are there, but mediocre writing stifles them to mere chuckles in many cases which is disappointing to say the least. But, if you're just looking for a cookie cutter romantic comedy, STRINGS gets a passing grade.

Why? That’s the only thing I can think of while watching No Strings Attached. I expected Ashton Kutcher to be in another romantic comedy but I really wanted more from Natalie Portman. The two play friends who found each other after years of not seeing each other. They become close friends again and Portman’s character pushes for a friends with benefits type situation. I was a little thrown off because it is usually the guy in these situations who pushes for more than just friends. The movie was very lightweight and didn’t put too much pressure on my emotions, which was quite nice. The movie was also very predictable, but I guess I shouldn’t be expecting The Usual Suspects esque twist. I also thought the movie was not sexy enough, especially since it is about sex with friends. The two main actors did not have enough chemistry for me to believe their sex scenes, it just felt awkward. I will have to give this movie a bad rating.

No Strings Attached is the latest romantic comedy to star Ashton Kutcher. It is about a guy and a girl (Kutcher and Natalie Portman) that are long time friends and decide to test the waters to see if they can have a sexual relationship while still maintaining their friendship. The biggest twist to this movie is the fact that Portman’s character is the one pushing for the “no strings attached” angle. This is unusual and gives the film a little edge. Although the movie had some entertaining moments, the jokes of the film really left a bad taste in my mouth. They just were not funny. Another issue with the film is that Reitman, the director, tried to do raunchy but couldn’t really achieve the good raunchy. Making a film raunchy is a very difficult task to accomplish, with only a few movies being able to do so including Something About Mary. But this movie was definitely not Something About Mary. Although Portman’s character is cute at times and really shows off her funny side, this is definitely not one of her best roles. I would even venture to say this is one of her worst. Not because she was not good in it, just because I did not think the belonged in a film like this. I would not suggest seeing this film.

"A raunchy sex comedy." OK, I'm a little interested. "Directed by Ivan Reitman." Now I'm more intrigued. "Starring Ashton Kutcher." Whoa, you're starting to lose me here. "And Natalie Portman." Huh? Well, if SHE'S in it. And it's really Natalie Portman that takes No Strings Attached out of the realm of boilerplate sex romp into something different.
She and Kutcher are old friends who meet later on in life and come to what may be the greatest agreement ever: He gets to have hassle free sex with Natalie Portman (OK, her character, but you get the idea). At first, his "lovable" goof is cool with this, but eventually, he's going to fall in love, and have to unfreeze her unfeeling heart. There's nothing new in the story, so don't expect it.
What is fresh is Portman, who was always a great actress. But it's unusual to see her being this fun and sexy (SNL short films notwithstanding). She's not above saying something naughty, but it's not for shock value. She's an actress who is never less than believable, even when she has to act with (or against, in some cases) someone as bland as Kutcher. She's the reason why I don't have a problem recommending this movie.

Vince Vaughn and Kevin James come together for this buddy buddy comedy film directed by Ron Howard. I am definitely not use to seeing comedy movies directed by Ron Howard but I very much enjoyed this film. The two co-star’s characters have been friends for a very long time (in the film) and one of them runs into a very serious problem. He finds out that his long time friend’s wife is cheating on him. I don’t know what I would do in this situation but I know that it wouldn’t be easy. Ron Howard does a great job of illustrating the difficulty of this terrible situation. One problem with this film is that I kept asking myself if it was supposed to be funny. With such a serious topic tackled, I sometimes felt bad for laughing. Maybe that was the point of the film. I didn’t love this movie but it had its funny parts. It was worth the money seeing but I wouldn’t say it was any of their finest roles.

The Dilemma, the new Vince Vaughn comedy, is all about a pretty serious topic. The movie revolves around how to tell your best friend that his wife is cheating on him. The movie, and specifically Vince Vaughn had to tackle this tough topic while not losing that “thing” that has kept movie goers flocking to see Vaughn’s performances for years. The movie shows Vaughn in a much more adult-light than I was use to. This movie is very different from the sophomoric humor in some of Vaugn’s greatest hits like Old School and Wedding Crashers, because it tackles a tougher subject and the dialogue is deeper. The movie is set in Chicago and the films director (Ron Howard) really uses a lot of famous architecture from the windy city. Vaughn’s costar, Kevin James, also has a very different role from his usual Paul Blart characters. Overall I thought the movie was very good and funny although sad at times.

No Strings Attached, starring Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman is a romantic comedy about whether or not two long time friends can remain friends even when they become romantic. The two mega stars decide to give “friends with benefits” a try, which drives the plot in this very funny movie. The movie produces a steady stream of amusing scenes and comedic situations while still being cute enough to draw in the romantic comedy crowd. Natalie Portman is one of my favorite actors and after seeing her in Black Swan, I wasn’t quite sure why she would do what I consider to be a lower quality type of movie. I was definitely surprised when I watched this film because it was actually amusing. The female character in the film, played by Portman was the driving force behind the friends with benefits idea and she also set the rules they must follow if the situation were to work. This film comically illustrates how difficult it is to remain friends while still being intimate.

I really enjoyed this romantic comedy starring Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman. It was an easy to watch comedy with cute moments and beautiful people. I did not expect much of this movie and I was pleasantly surprised. Do not get me wrong, this is not an excellent film, but it is entertaining and that is a good quality for a romantic comedy. The story is not original and the questions raised are as old as time: “Can two friends have sex without falling in love?”. Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher have an O.K chemistry in the film and they look so cute together. Seriously, they should have babies together and be done with it. Natalie’s character is more defined than Ashton’s. His character is kind of all over the place and I am not sure what the director was going for with it. Overall, it is a great date night movie.

It is yet another romantic comedy that bores you to death and raises completely irrelavent questions. I can not believe that Natalie Portman agreed to be in this film, especially after such a strong and Oscar-worthy performance in Black Swan. I bet she could not say no to the big paycheck, which makes me sad, does she really need to lower her standarts for money? Doesn’t she have enough? Anyway, her performance was still good, considering that the movie is absolutely dumb. Ashton Kutcher plays the same character as always and gets away with it just because he is so freaking handsome. I did like Lake Bell character and I do think she did an excellent job. I wish she starred in her own movie. Besides that, the movie is a complete disaster and I do not recommend seeing it, unless you are bored out of your mind and have nothing better to do with your money.

In this romantic comedy starring Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman, two long time friends try to see if they can remain friends while beginning to be more than friends. The title of the movie says it all, Kutcher and Portman try to begin something romantic but don’t want to label it with anything. The movie was originally titled “Friends with Benefits” but because of another very similar film coming out soon starring Justin Timberlake and Mila Kuniz. This film dives into the age old question of whether two friends can be intimate but at the same time remain good friends. The two lead roles play very laid back characters with regards to sex which is good because at times it masks the lack of chemistry Kutcher and Portman have. Another thing that really got to me during the movie is the fact that the two main actors seemed so unevenly matched. Kutcher is perfect for the role, but Portman is a world-class actor. The entire time I felt like she shouldn’t be in this film, especially after her amazing performance in Black Swan.
