I absolutely loved this opera and I recommend it highly. The music is delightful and it is a great spectacle as well. As Nixon, baritone James Maddalena was great and his character was nicely layered and interesting, I did find his voice to be a little bit weak, but overall he did very well for his debut at the Met. It was interesting that James Maddalena portrayed Nixon as very idealisitic and also very desperate to procreate. Act II aria, “I Am The Wife Of Mao Tse-Tung,” performed by Kathleen Kim was absolutely superb and it made me shiver. I have never been that moved and excited, it was breath-taking and electrifying. The libretto by Alice Goodman was very lyrical and funny in the same time, I enjoyed it very much. Overall, it is a must see opera at the Met.
