La Fanciulla del West is an opera created by Puccini. Many say that Puccini’s mid to late period work is among his most innovative because of the new directions he decided to take his characters. For example, the tenor, generally cast as the straight cut romantic hero is actually cast as the bandit and bad guy in this opera. This is definitely different than many of Puccini’s earlier works. This opera is playing at the metropolitan opera, which is where I saw it. I very much enjoyed this unconventional take on the opera. Typically, I am not the biggest opera fan but this was a lovely variation on what I typically thought of an opera. The costumes were amazing and of course the singing was spectacular. I could really feel like I was connecting with the characters. I wasn’t bored for one second. It was a bit expensive to see but it was long enough to make it worth it. The quality of the acting was definitely great. I suggest to anyone who is into operas and even if you are not sure to go see this.
