This is a great movie- but it plays fast and loose with the truth.
None of the horrible things depicted happened; He in fact had a great life and his children publicly said so.
These events were made for for entertainment. Unfortunately so many people BELIEVE ANYTHING on a screen and it's a shame. Yes racism is alive and well; practiced by ALL races.
This is exactly how the Holocaust happened, as with all genocides world-wide. People were shown 'news' reels with a racist slant. For this reason I give it only 3 stars. We don't need for made up history.

    > > Comments:
This is a GREAT movie because it gives the viewer a good taste of the ugly truth about the evil of racism and the use of it by many white people, businesses, and government to benefit the overall white controlled lifestyles and national goals. Most white americans have no idea about the horrors because they are told to "put it behind them". As long as this goes on our nation will never heal the wounds of slavery and never repay the giant losses experienced by african americans.

    > The next time I hear annoying people I will leave to get your management
    > deal with it. I was forced to tolerate racist snickering during school
    > lessons back in the sixties and I WILL NOT TOLERATE ANY MORE RACIST

i guess a couple of the reviewers here didn't take time to watch the interview with the Directors of this farce.
typical of Hollywood hypocrites, they twisted some of the facts, and in some cases there were outright fabrications --oh sorry you call that fiction -- psst, he didn't watch his mother being raped by their 'slave master'
and i don't think he grew up a slave
but the ever vigilant elitists will suck this up like its good ice cream!

There is no fantasy here, I grew up when this was going on. This is probably a great film but I don't recommend you see it. It is very painful and by now you should already know how stupid America behaved from slavery days into the 1980s and in some places beyond.
If you do see it, it may strengthen your feelings about the stupidity of racial discrimination. But, it is very painful. You will also probably be very very glad we were smart enough to elect Obama twice! Most people, especially the young are free from the shame that shines thorough this film...this film will shock the young, like something out of science fiction.

Shameful with all the errors in history that the uneducated are going to take as fact... They are going to act like this was some history lesson instead of another Hollywood history bender. Some good fantasy here ..

This is what movie scripts are all about. The Butler is an emotional movie from the heart, that draws you in like a great story. The performances given in this movie by all of the actors are great!! Robin Williams as Dwight Eisenhower, John Cusack as Richard Nixon, - how could you go wrong!
