There is a double standard for foreign films; and that goes double for French films. If anything this trite, sententious, sacharin and insignificant was made by Hollywood, it rightfully would not see the light of day. If it is French it gets a minimum of 3 stars and is described with the same rapture as the second coming of Christ. Christ, is this film boring. Not only boring, but formulaic, one dimensional, no plot, no dialogue and did I say boring? Not one character is remotely believable and the director and screenwriter try for cheap emotional scenes that are more stomach turning than heart wrenching. Michael Phillips is worse than Michael Willmington; and he was God awful. Any Hollywood movie this week provided exponentially more entertainment than Le Havre and received 1/2 the number of stars. As a critic, your job Mike is to warn us of horrible movies so we don't waste our time or money on trash like Le Havre.
