I thought this film was alright but I am not sure if it is worth seeing in the theaters. The film has a pretty interesting story and the characters are great but i think this film was made more for fans of Hank Williams than for the regular audience. The director definitely took some liberties in imagining the last days of Williams and it just did not seem realistic or genuine. I do think that the film was very well made and executed beautifully and I think that fans of Williams will be very pleased. I did think that the music score was great and the performances were very good as well but i am not the biggest fan of Hank Williams so I was not as emotionally involved with this film as a fan would be.
I think people should give this movie another chance. It doesn't have any big movie stars in it and it doesn't even look as slick as a lot of other movies about singers, but the clearly everyone who was involved in making it cared about it. It just feels like everyone poured their heart and soul into and did the best they could. I admit that I don't know much about Hank Williams, but I do like the songs they played in the movie and I think if he were around today he would probably appreciate the fact that anyone bothered to tell his story. He died really young and would have had a much longer career has he lived, but that's the way it goes in showbiz, I guess. Some of the scenes in the movie aren't adequately explained but I do think that if you watch it twice and maybe do a little bit of reading on the man himself you will get it. That's what good movies get us to do, after all, is to learn.
I'm pretty sure the synopsis for this movie is wrong on the title page. This is the movie about Hank Williams which just came out. I really wanted to like this a lot more than I actually did since I am a lifelong Hank Williams fan (thanks mostly to my grandpa, lol) but this movie just doesn't add up to much. It's almost as if they just wanted to pay reverence to the legend and then forgot to tell a story. There's barely anything that happens in this movie, it's mostly just Hank Williams sitting around and moping, staring into empty space. I don't know what they were trying to say about Williams with this kind of portrayal, but if his songs were any indication, then he was far more interesting and complex than this movie would have us believe. The music is pretty good though they left out a lot of his greatest hits. I hope this isn't the last movie about Hank Williams - his story deserves to be told and told right.
Hank Williams was a very interesting figure in the history of modern American music. Unfortunately, this movie makes him seem like just any other struggling singer who meets with an untimely demise. The actor Henry Thomas plays Williams and I assume he was trying to show how deep his internal struggles were but unfortunately he seems to just sit there and brood the whole time. The music in the movie is obviously quite good but that isn't enough to carry the film. The story is pretty standard as far as biopics go, so if you're expecting a movie as good as "Walk the Line" then you should just go back and watch that classic. That movie really got it right. This one tries but never seems to take off. You kind of wait the whole time for something big to happen but until William dies, nothing big happens at all. It's fairly predictable and not up to the standard of the legacy of Williams himself.
I did not really like this film and I do not think it is worth seeing in the theaters. My friend is a huge Hank Williams fan and he dragged me with him to see this film. I do not really know who Williams is so the film was a bit pointless to me and I did not have a good time watching it. I found the script to be a bit weak and kind of boring. The pacing of the film is a bit too slow for my taste but then again the fans of Williams will most likely love this film just like my friend did.
