This film has garnered a lot of praise from critics, but to be honest, I just didn't find it that revolutionary. In fact, it was rather formulaic, in the sense that it has its basic fundamentals for a successful teen comedy:
- weird parents using "hip" lingo
- catchy singer / songwriter score
- characters with "quirky" friends
- geek chic elements hearkening back to Napoleon Dynamite (i.e. Tic Tac obsession and hamburger phone)
It's not that this was a bad film. It was just typical, that's all. And for a film that is being toted around as "refreshing" and "edgy", I just didn't see it. Maybe I went to the wrong film...?
