This was a good movie and deserves better than the 2 or 3 stars some users have given the movie. The movie is based on a true story in the year 1949. WWII is over and a mobster named Mickey wants to take over the drug, gambling, and club scenes of Los Angeles. Mickey, (Played by Sean Penn) has most cops in his pockets. Thanks to a mayor who doesn't want to see his city turn into another Chicago or New York, he gets clean cops like the ones played by Brolin and Gosling to stop Mickey and his gang. It was a good movie and definately deserves a four star rating if not a five star rating.

BEST ACTING? Sean Penn has ever done. Wasnt disappointed but cant help but NOT believe this was a character stretch for Sean.

Wow, style, lots of it, substance, not so much. Save your money and wait for it to show up on your favorite cable channel. It shouldn't take long.
By the way, the joker above who rated the "FILM" four stars, and then wrote 4 reviews. Come on bud...one review is plenty and it's way too obvious.

Personally, I think Sean Penn is cursed...at least when it comes to big multi starrers. The only time he ever did a big star cast movie that was also a success was Mystic River. Remember All The President's Men?? He was flanked by such stalwarts as Jude Law and Kate Winslet. But the movie came and went without so much as a whimper. It was a giant, ugly egg at the box office. I have a feeling that the same thing will happen with Gangster Squad, which also has a huge cast that includes Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin, and Emma Stone. While watching it, there were many times when I felt like I was going to burst out laughing at how over the to Sean Penn's performance was. It was really, really melodramatic in a lot of scenes and I couldn't tell if he was being genuine or ironic. Go fig. It's an interesting story at times - a cat and mouse game of chase - but on the whole it leaves you wanting.

When I first heard that they were releasing this wannabe blockbuster in the second week of January when all the Oscar bait is long since out and studios seek to dump their least desirable misfires upon an unsuspecting public working off their holiday candy canes, I thought, yikes: it must be bad. Like bad bad.

Turns out, it’s not so much bad as it is plain deficient. There’s a lot to admire in Gangster Squad – it’s nothing if not stylish – but there are many things in the movie that simply never accomplish anything other than “look” right. The sets are noir, the costumes are vintage, and that’s about it. The guns, in this post-Newtown era, seem a bit much and unsavory. But that’s a debate I’ll leave to Quentin Tarantino and cable news talking heads.

Gangster Squad is about a mob boss named Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) who rules the roost; he gets what he wants because everyone lives to serve him, cops and politicians included. A ragtag group of cops led by Sgt. John O’Mara (Josh Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling) come to challenge him, once and for all, and to show everyone that good does triumph over evil in most cinematic sagas. Hip. Hip. Hooray?

The movie gets the style right; it just screams “gangsta”. What it doesn’t do, however, is give its cast anything substantial to do. Apart from a few scenes for Gosling and a dozen or so solid moments for Sean Penn, there’s little the cast gets to do except stand around in their costumes and look like a 1930s Old Hollywood Poster. The story and the performances tend to go over the top, and as much as we like to fetishize our mob icons, this is a prime example of less is more.

The critics will probably hate this film but I never listen to the critics and I had lots of fun watching this film. Yes, the film does have a lot of shortcomings and it’s quite silly and too violent at times, but if you go see it with a right attitude you will no doubt have fun. The film has an amazing cast, it is very cool looking visually and I thought the story was quite interesting. Sean Penn was totally awesome in this film and don’t remember the last time I enjoyed watching him act as much as i did during this film. Overall, I thought the film was very entertaining and stylish and I think it is worth seeing in the theaters.

I love films about old time gangsters, one could say I am obsessed with these films so when I saw a trailer for this movie I looking forward seeing it. I can say that I was not disappointed and I really enjoyed watching this film, therefore i recommend seeing t in the theaters. The film looked great, it was stylish and smart, I also thought that the story was interesting and because the film is based on true events it was also very convincing. The film is very violent so if you can not stomach it I recommend seeing a different film. I did think that the cast was amazing, Sean Penn was definitely my favorite and I also thought that Ryan Gosling makes a great cop (a very sexy one). Overall, this film was very entertaining and easy on the eyes.

I was pretty satisfied with this film and if you like movies about gangsters I think you will enjoy this one. The film was very nice visually and I liked the style in which it was filmed the story was interesting as well and the cast was amazing. I do wish that the director expanded the storylines of some of the characters a bit more but overall i enjoyed watching this film. I thought that Sean Penn was absolutely amazing and it was so much fun to watch him. Overall, I thought this film was pretty good and I think it is worth seeing on the big screen.

I am a sucker for gangster films, I love them and I can’t get enough of them. I was so excited about this film, the first time I saw the trailer I knew I will see this film in the theaters. So as you can expect I had pretty high hopes for this film and I have to say that I was not disappointed. I thought the film was very stylish, it had a great story, it was visually superb and the cast was absolutely perfect, I mean it was the dream cast. This film is pure entertainment and yes it was a bit superficial and I will probably forget this film fairly fast but i still had a great time watching it. Sean Penn was so great in this film, it was so much fun to watch him in the role of the gangster. I do have to say that the film is very violent so if you do not like that I suggest seeing a different film.
