A parody of the original Star Trek TV series, including the subsequent industry known as the Star Trek Convention. A bizarre event which to this day panders to some of the most irrational beings in THIS gallexy.
For insiders and fans of the original TV series, it is simply a MUST SEE film. A hysterically funny look into the careers of a group of actors who can't seem to get work elsewhere because of their success in this particular Sci-Fi TV series. They are now both resentful of the type-casting and simultaneously, dependent on it.
Meanwhile, good natured aliens who have been monitoring the TV series from space have built their entire civilization based on their heroes and the technology they've been watching on the show. When these aliens are threatened by an evil race of creatures bent on destroying them, they come to earth looking for what they think is a real captain with a real crew on a real ship.
Alan Rickman represents the hapless Leonard Nimoy, who spent most of the 70's, 80's, and 90's trying to convince everybody he was "Not Spock" and could ACT, only to later write books saying that he WAS indeed Spock. In this fantasy version, the William Shatner character turns out to be a rather likable fellow, and is loved and respected by his fellow cast members. Something the real William Shatner never enjoyed.
