Othelloish professor David Kepesh becomes especially enamored with an adventurous female student, the gorgeous Consuela Castillo. She is perhaps the first true love of his life. The obvious reference in the movie to the \\\"beast with two backs\\\" is backed up with other themes from the Shakespearean play. The similarities are many and include the older guy/ younger girl, the soccer reference that older guys can\\\'t keep up with younger girls, lovers of different heritages, uncontrolled jealously by the male, fear of confrontation with the parents (father) and he really doesn\\\'t realize what he has until it is gone. Conversely they end the movie in a bed, though alive, not dead, after she has a health episode. The theme is that love blinds Kepesh, and that it keeps him from seeing the truth.
Elegy should have been re-titled \"Beauty and the Sexy Beast\" which chronicles the pathetic pathology of an unlikely roué played by an otherwise sympathetic Ben Kingsley and the luminous Penelope Cruz. Unlike Kundera, Roth\'s onscreen adaptation reads like the unbearable lightness of boring.
