Dredd Movie Reviews
User reviews on Dredd
Okay, this one is definitely for the boys, though there are more than a few enjoyable moments for even the girliest of girls out there like moi. I think Karl Urban is going to get a lot of new female fans with his rather awesome body and manly demeanor. I, for one, am sick of the skinny pretty boys like Robert Pattinson and the Jonas Brothers. It's nice to see a real macho man on screen doing macho things without having to woo some pretty little thing the whole time. I admit that this movie did have its fair share of boring subplots (what is with the whole drug thing in the future?) but the overall theme is pretty interesting. The character that Urban plays is called Judge Dredd which is fitting since he is a judge that deals out justice on the spot for offenders. I really liked the CGI but the story could have used some backing up with more backstory and depth.
I know I wasn't the only one in our group of friends that got flamed for defending something that is OBVIOUSLY not the best movie in the world, but you gotta give props to a movie that enjoys itself and doesn't care if the critics or art house snobs will ever like it. This is a futuristic joy ride, not unlike a lot of comicbook superhero movies where everything is bad in the future and only one man with a unique gift can save the world from itself. It kind of has the special distinction of being the first movie where the hero is a cop in the future who is not just a law enforcement officer but also a judge and executioner too. Karl Urban plays the lead and if you're wondering where you've seen him before, he was Boromir in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. He is the perfect actor for the past and he makes the action scenes and the dialogue really come to life. A great movie for your action lovin buddies.
