I have to say that I was kind of surprised by how much I liked this movie. I went in expecting to hate it but I found it to be actually quite interesting and well- made. The acting is also quite good, though sometimes the story starts to feel like a soap opera. There's a lot of lying, deceit, and sex in it.
Robert Pattinson plays Geroges Duroy, a young and penniless man who uses powerful women to work his way up the social ladder. All of the women are attached or married so it's kind of a mystery why they let the young scoundrel take advantage of them, but they do. Pattinson plays his part very well, I thought, with the right mix of charm and smug. Only he could pull that off, lol.
Uma Thurman looks really old next to Pattinson, which is odd because Kristin Scott Thomas is actually much older but their love story doesn't seem as strange. Christina Ricci is great in her part (she usually is) but in the end this is Pattinson's movie. Strictly a movie for fans of the young actor who want to see him play something a bit different from what he usually does.
I did not like this film and I do not recommend seeing it in the theaters. I found the film to be boring and the characters were underdeveloped and not well acted. Robert Pattinson was barely alive in this film and he affirmed my opinion about him being a terrible actor. I found this film to be overall silly and very dull and unimaginative. There were some great actors in it like Kristen Scott Thomas and Uma Thurman and they did a great job but Pattinson definitely dragged this film down. The only thing I have enjoyed about this film was the wardrobe and pretty scenery. I do not think this film is worth the price of the movie ticket.
Wow, what a misfire! Maybe it's because Robert Pattinson can't seem to get a hit when he isn't playing a vampire. He's hella cute, of course, but he can't carry a movie on his own. Sorry, Robby, it's just the truth.
He plays a poor young boy in this movie who basically sleeps his way to the top of Parisian society. It's kind of like Evita but the genders are all the opposite. He uses his charm and good looks to get into the good graces of several powerful and influential women, and he has to of course fall in love with one of them before he realizes what a scoundrel he is. You can guess how it ends.
Pattinson is pretty good in the film, though I thought another young British actor would be better. When you watch Pattinson, it's hard to get the image of him as Edward out of your head. Uma Thurman, Kristin Scott Thomas, and Christina Ricci are all good in their parts, though none are really given much to do except sleep with Pattinson. And to be honest, he seems to sleep walk his way through the movie. At least it's not Kristen Stewart!
I did not like this film and definitely do not recommend seeing it in the theaters. I felt that the film was rushed and the characters were not developed and i did not really care for any of them. I was never a fan of Pattinson and in this film he was so freaking boring and bland so he proved me right yet again: he can not act. I usually enjoy costume dramas but even the wonderful clothes did not make this film any better. Overall, i suggest you save your time and money and see a better film.
It was an alright film that is stunning visually but has one very big flaw: the leading man kind of sucks. The story itself was quite interesting but I found the film to be a bit unfocused and chaotic and it was kind of exhausting to watch. I was never a fan of Pattinson and this film confirmed it again: he can not act. I think the director made a huge mistake casting Pattinson in this film because with a different lead this movie could have been almost great. I did not really like any of the characters and I think all of them needed more depth. Overall, I do not recommend seeing this film in the theaters.
