As Cool as I Am Movie Reviews

This movie could have been much better and more interesting if the writer and director didn't opt for the most melodramatic choice at every turn. The movie is about teenagers becoming parents (the classic 'babies having babies' meme) but it gets so heavy handed so quickly and doesn't let the characters just state who they are before the melodrama takes over. It kind of feels like an assault on the senses in a way the worst soap operas can, though this one is more tolerable. The cast is decent, though they've all done much better work in other movies. I'm not a huge fan of James Marsden but he proved on 30 Rock that he has comedic chops. Unfortunately in this one he's cast as some kind of outdoorsy dude and he has a lot of trouble pulling it off. Sorry, but just because you grow stubble doesn't make you Paul Bunyan. Also, Claire Danes is a fine actress but she seems bored in a lot of scenes. This is strictly broadcast TV material, not big screen movie megaplex stuff.
Claire Danes is all grown up! Can you believe it?? I haven't seen much of Homeland so believe me when I tell you that my lasting impression of her is as the wide-beyond-her-years teen on "My So-Called Life". So I didn't know what to expect from this movie. As a mom, I did have some issues with the way the parents were portrayed. I think it's unrealistic to show modern parents as so lah-di-dah about everything. That being said, I suspended my disbelief and went along with the story as best I could. Once I did that, it was easy to digest. The whole thing is probably better served as TV movie (I didn't even know this was out even thought it has such big stars) so I'm guessing the makers may have wanted something more substantial. Still, it's a good movie for teens and parents and shows how even despite out best intentions we sometimes end up making the same mistakes our parents did.
I did not really like this film and I do not recommend seeing it in the theaters. The film was kind of boring and I feel that it did not learn anything new about the difficulties of adolescence. I also felt that the movie was way too melodramatic for my taste and it missed so many small but important details about life. I did think that the cast was pretty good but they were not able to make this film less boring, however it was not their fault. I think my biggest complaint about this film was that it was very unoriginal and the director had nothing new to offer. Overall, this film was not horrible but it is definitely not worth seeing in the theaters because it is not worth the price of a movie ticket.
