Another Year is a movie by an excellent director Mike Leigh, who also directed Happy-Go-Lucky, Vera Drake and All Or Nothing. This movie is about an ordinary, middle age couple Tom and Gerri and their friends and family. Tom and Gerri are pretty much satisfied with their life, but their friends are in a constant state of turmoil. I love Mike Leigh’s movies and this one did not disappoint me either. David Bradley and Imelda Staunton created such believable and lovable characters, I swear they are just like my parents. The whole cast did an excellent job and made the movie that much better. The movie is sort of melancholic and in the same time sweet. I thought this movie is going to be much sadder, but really it just makes you think about life and your own existence. This is a very subtle film. Overall I recommend this movie to anyone who likes to be challenged to think.
When I saw the previews for this film I got really excited and could not wait to see it in the theaters. However, I was a little bit disappointed with the film, it had a good idea but somehow it did not work in the end. The film is truly beautiful visually and the shots of the sky with another planet in it are amazing but the whole sci-fi element did not really make sense in this film. It is almost like this film was split in half and I was not sure if it was a drama or a sci-fi flick. Overall, I do not recommend seeing this film in the theaters.
