I was really disappointed with this film and I do not recommend seeing it in the theaters because it will be waste of your time and your money. I expected this film to be really good and interesting but it was not at all. If you think that this film is at all based on facts you are grossly mistaken, there might be some loose facts there and here but it really is not enough. I do have to say that the film is gorgeous visually and it is a real pleasure for your yeas but it is not enough. There is not much logic in this film and if you are ready to look over that you might actually enjoy it but I could not. Overall, I was really disappointed and did not have a good time watching this film.
I had really high hope for this film and I guess my hopes were too high and i was really disappointed with this movie. I hope that people realize that this film is not really based on facts(if it is then i did not hear or see any), therefore I was confused about the genre of this film. I felt that the film was trying to please everyone way too hard and it was very evident. It was beautiful visually and I enjoyed the costumes but the film lacked context and that is the main ingredient in a good movie. The actions of the characters are not justified and mostly it does not make any sense and lacks basic logic.
This is a political thriller about a theory that it was Edward De Vere, Earl of Oxford who wrote Shakespeare's plays, the film is directed by Roland Emmerich and stars Rhys Ifans, Vanessa Redgrave and David Thewlis. I did not like this film and I do not recommend seeing it in the theaters. I was looking forward seeing this film and i was very disappointed when i saw it. even though the film is gorgeous visually it lacks logic and facts and the film is all about revealing something in every scene, it is utterly exhausting. There are too many explanations in the film and it is not necessary because it is not a doc**entary, people came to see this film to be entertained, unfortunately that did not happen.
Roland Emmerich is an action guy, known for big blow ups as Independence Day, Godzilla and The Day After Tomorrow. With Anonymous, he tries to make a serious movie. Sometimes, you can take the guy out of the big budget blockbuster, but you can't take the big budget blockbuster out of the guy.
The film supposes that William Shakespeare never actually wrote all of the plays and sonnets that were attributed to him, but written by the Earl of Oxford...who in turn might be one of the lovers of Queen Elizabeth...who is facing an uprising. Amazingly it's not the ridiculousness of the subject matter that brings down the film, it's the lack of focus.
Oh, and the subject matter. And the direction, which has all the subtlety of a Roland Emmerich production. There's jumps through time that couldn't be more confusing. Not even the very good cast can stop this from being complete hooey.
