A "comedy"? Hmmm... more of a "comedy-drama." But, if you take that as a whole separate category, then Sunshine Cleaning is quite the "purebred": Always believable, sometimes painfully authentic (which makes for both good comedy and good drama), never absurd (in comedy) or pretentious (in drama). Just the right amount of time is taken to develop just the right amount of character and deliver just the right amount of plot. Even Rose and Norah's mom, who is not around physically, is woven into the story with a clever technique besides just flashbacks. The ending holds a turn of events family-minded people will like.
Quirky and unpredictable, this movie is sort of a \"Coen Brothers meets Little Miss Sunshine\". Almost all characters are underdeveloped though, with one armed merchant Winston (Clifton Collins Jr.) standing out. Vulnerable Amy Adams and fatherly Alan Arkin (you'll love his glasses) give excellent performances. Definitely worth seeing.
Cute little film. Entertaining, sometimes very funny, sometimes pathetically sad. Amy Adams and Emily Blunt are great together as polar-opposite sisters. Adams stands out particularly in her quiet desire to be and want more for her life. Steve Zahn gives a refreshingly honest performance that could have easily fallen into the stereotypical redneck antics he is usually cast for. Credit to the writer, the director, or both in steering some excellent performances.
I went to the premiere at The Grove in Los Angeles and I loved the movie. I totally agree that it should be rated R. The said f*** a lot and it was inappropriate. Sunshine Cleaning is very good. Amy Adams and Emily Blunt did very well. I'm very glad that they worked together. This movie wouldn't have been good without them in it.
