Another in a long line of raunchy rom-coms, Going The Distance (winner for most boring title of the year) tries hard to be several movies at the same time. It's very of-this-time, focusing on two people in dying industries. It wants to be a cute romance. It wants to dirty. Maybe it would have been good if it had just picked one of those and gone with it.
The Mac Guy plays Garrett, an A&R guy at a record label. He starts a fling with Drew Barrymore's Erin, a newspaper intern whose hot geekiness only seems to exist in the movies. When she returns to the west coast, she and Garrett decide to keep their relationship going long distance. This sets up a lot of unfunny "jokes" about phone sex and text messaging, and very little wondering as to whether these two are going to make it, because: a) it's a movie, and b) the characters, like the actors that portray them, are likeable but incredibly boring.
Like a lot of other romantic comedies these days, this movie feels it necessary to throw in lots of raunchy humor and a gang of supporting characters much more interesting than the ones we're supposed to be rooting for. It all feels like it was put together by committee. It almost makes you wish the movie industry were a dying industry, as long as it would stop them from making movies as bland as this.
