Yet another movie about a middle aged woman who is lost. But the crisis she is facing is not a mid-life crisis. This character is forever stuck in the mindset of junior high school. When she finally meets the handsome, age appropriate, self-actualized man near the very end of the movie, she blows it again. (And I'm not talking about a sex scene here; I mean she cannot handle the intimacy of a relationship outside the physical arena.) Although we're made to believe she gives the relationship a try, it is hopelessly unsustainable. We are not talking about a woman of substance, nor do we get to watch a character develop and grow from her experiences. We are talking about a little girl, hiding in a closet, sucking her thumb, and refusing the world. Even a brilliant actress such as Julia Roberts could not give substance to this undeveloped person. To make things worse, she is surrounded by characters who might have something truly interesting to say and explore.

If they could turn off the soundtrack, this would be a visually stunning movie. The scenes of Italy are fabulous (don't allow yourself to get distracted by Die Zauberflote - yes, in German of course - played in the background to let you know you're in Italy!) The wedding scene in India deserved to be fully celebrated as it was one of the most visually pleasing moments in the film. However, the pageantry and costuming are sadly cut short by the one meaningful insight this character experiences. It wasn't worth the exchange.

The Way,The Truth ...and the Life......Just substitute Christianity for the Hinduism and you will enjoy this movie and stop judging others.....Jesus Christ was a perfect example ...True followers of Christ follow his example. BY THEIR FRUITS YOU WILL KNOW THEM...remember...the True Church is a hospital for sinners NOT a country club/resort for the saints

Movie was pretty good. Julia Roberts of course was very good in her role. Movie nakes you stop and think about your life and how you're spending it.

Excellent movie!!! I'm going back to see it again. It would have been better if the "Pray" part of the movie centered around Jesus (THE WAY, THE TRUTH, and THE LIFE) instead of the false Hindu god ... but I was able to look at the Hinduism part of the movie in India and think about spending the one on one time with the One and ONLY Savior of the world ... YESHUA/JESUS.

All in all ... I gave this movie five stars because it really spoke to my heart ... and it was so easy to relate to. I'm sure many women have felt the inward struggles that Liz went through in this movie.

I went to see this Muck... I have the book on my must read list, I hope it reads better than the movie was done! There were way too many slow rewinds thru-out story lines, and it was more like dribble than a Woman's or person's personal journey to find her self!
Julia Roberts is a very good actress, but I feel she fell short of the mark by picking this role, it did not inspire me, make me Cry, or want to do a Jig either. So in conclusion, it couldn't been better, a little less piecemeal, and 30 minutes shorter! Just another critic looking for her $$ worth @ the movies, not The Meaning Of Life, I already know that!

I loved the book and the movie brought Liz's outward and inward journey pleasantly back to me again. I went with about five women and we all absolutely loved it. I have talked to several other friends that have seen it and they say the same thing. It appears to me that many critical reviewers never read the book. Why complain about the way a persons true story happened? It is what it is.

This movie showed me once again the dangers of going to get a "fortune" reading.

The movie opens with Julia Roberts going to have her palm read by a three-toothed old man in Bali named Ktuti.

I need to explain to you the testimony of an ex-satanist and 3rd highest santa ria practitioner in the NE US. He explained that the "psychic" or other fortune teller uses demons to tell him or her what the visitor is going through. Then, the fortune teller (whether he realizes it or not) puts CURSES on the visitor. Because the visitor broke God's will to not seek fortune tellers, but to seek Him, the demon then has a legal right to attack the visitor.

This is what happens to Julia Roberts' character. Ktuti reads her palm, gives some general facts, and then declares (cursing her) "You will lose all your money. You will have two marriages, one short, one long." Basically, Ktuti curses her to lose her money and her marriage.

Julia returns home, and - surprise - love leaves her heart. The demon works on her alone. Her husband weeps at the divorce meeting. He even refuses to accept a divorce in exchange for all the money and the house they share. He truly loves her.

The main character, Liz, also moves into worshiping a human, a guru woman. She travels to three places in her one-year voyage of discovery. The second place is to India, where she visits an ashram and joins others who praise, worship, and meditate in front of a framed photo of the Indian woman, flanked by two candles.

I not only recommend you NOT see this flick. I recommend you warn all your friends.

Eat Pray Love is supposed to be about a woman's journey to find the meaning of her life through food, spirituality, and love. When one of the defining moments of liberation is eating a whole plate of spaghetti, you know you're in superficial territory. And that's what you get here: a superficial story with a narcissistic lead only slightly redeemed by Julia Roberts' performance.

When Liz Gilbert's marriage disintegrates, she travels the world looking for the three things in the title. She finds the eat in Italy, where she eats like mad (though, this IS Julia Roberts, so she still looks skinny even when she's having a hard time fitting into jeans). In India, meditates. Then, in Bali, she runs into the man of her dreams and, what do you know, falls in love.

And that's about it. There is very little drama in this film, as we pretty much follow Liz along on her journey. I'm sure this worked well in the book the film is based on (where she could get really descriptive with details), but this is a film. It's a visual medium. Long winded descriptions of food don't come across in five second shots and words of wisdom come across as vacuous. There's some good performances in the movie (Richard Jenkins in particular), and Julia always brings a special quality to the screen. But as with most book adaptations, this movie loses a lot in translation.
