I believe the director saved money by hiring either a newbie cenematographer or one whose eyesight is failing. It was distracting that in too many scenes, the principal plane of focus was filmed out-of-focus. I'm not talking about depth-of-field issues...just plain, technically poor filming. There were also many shots were the cenematographer was searching for the correct focus. It was not an issue at the theater either. You know the projectionist did his part well...when you could see how sharpe the focus could be on those rare occasions the cenematographer got it right.
