The star-system was pronounced dead by almost everyone, but as of the moment of writing everyone is talking about Liza Minnelli in Cabaret and she made the covers of Time and Newsweek simultaneously. Contrast the …

Worst Movies of All Time

Submitted by akbarnali on October 16, 2010 – 10:16 pmNo Comment

Anyone’s who’s ever seen a movie knows that there are some pretty bad ones out there, some of them scraping the bottom of the creative bucket and collectively forming what are the worst movies of all time.  In fact, some of the worst movies of all time are so unforgettably bad that they deserve a special mention.  Take our word for it: if you can, stay miles away from any movie on this list of the worst movies of all time.

Gigli

Who can forget Gigli?  Many have tried and very few have apparently succeeded, as pretty much everyone who’s ever seen it remembers it as one of the low points in cinema history.  Starring then real-life couple Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez, it centered on a bizarre and improbable plot where the titular character played by Affleck is a mobster who becomes attracted to a lesbian named Ricki (played by Lopez).  You can safely guess what happens by the end, but you won’t get any brownie points for sticking through this one.  It’s universally regarded as one of the worst films of the last ten years, if not of all time!

Battlefield Earth

Oh the horror. What else can be said about what has been called “a cross between Star Wars and the smell of ass” (by none other than Jon Stewart, no less).  The film is based on a science fiction novel by L. Ron Hubbard (yes, the same man who founded Scientology) and tells the story of an Earthly rebellion that occurs when an alien race known as Psychlos tries to use the human race as gold miners.  Starring John Travolta and Forrest Whitaker, the film was drubbed by critics and panned by audiences who stayed away in mass droves.  Do yourself a favor and stay away for as long as you can!

Howard the Duck

Another science fiction bomb of legendary status, Howard the Duck was released in 1986 and starred Lea Thompson, Tim Robbins, Jeffrey Jones and Chip Zien as the voice of Howard the Duck.  Why was the film so awful?  Listen to its plot: Howard, an anthropomorphic duck from another planet, comes to Earth where he meets up with an aspiring singer named Beverly.  Of course, he falls in love with Beverly and in the process helps her career.  He also finds time to fend off a diabolical alien monster hellbent on destroying all of humanity.  Yeah, it doesn’t make much sense to us either.

Showgirls

Ah, Showgirls.  You knew it would be on the list somewhere.  Often described as “unimaginably bad”, Showgirls stars Elizabeth Berkley (yes, that sweet smart feminist of Saved By the Bell fame) as a young woman who comes to Las Vegas in search of herself and of course finds herself working as a stripper.  In due time, she becomes a showgirl, having “made it” as it were.  Because of the film’s graphic sex and violence, it was given an NC-17 rating.  More importantly, it has been rated among the absolute worst film ever made by audiences and critics since it was released in 1995.

Swept Away

One of Madonna’s many movie bombs, this one had the added injury of being directed by her ex-husband Guy Ritchie.  A remake of a film of the same name from 1974, it also starred Italian actor Adriano Giannini whose father Giancarlo Giannini played the same role in the original film.  The film was universally dismissed by critics upon its release, with many referring to it as a low point in the history of modern romantic tales put to celluloid.  It’s also safe to assume that it didn’t help the now defunct marriage of Madonna and Guy Ritchie.
