Titanic 3D – Coming In 2012!

Back in 1997, even before its release, James Cameron’s Titanic, like the ship whose story it would tell, was being considered a disaster of epic proportions.  At the time, it was the most expensive movie ever made, and had had its share of production issues, delays, budget problems and tinkerings at the hands of its maniacal, perfectionist director.  Then it was released in December of that year, and became what can only be called a cultural phenomenon.  It went on to become the biggest money maker of all time, as well as the winner of 11 Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director.

Yesterday, it was announced that Titanic will be released again on the big screen, this time in 3D, on April 6, 2012, only 4 days before the 100th anniversary of the Titanic setting sail.  2012 also marks the 100th anniversary of Paramount Pictures who, along with 20th Century Fox, co-produced the film.

In a press release, Cameron said, “There’s a whole generation that’s never seen ‘TITANIC’ as it was meant to be seen, on the big screen. And this will be ‘TITANIC’ as you’ve never seen it before, digitally re-mastered at 4K and painstakingly converted to 3D. With the emotional power intact and the images more powerful than ever, this will be an epic experience for fans and newcomers alike.”

In the years since its release, Titanic has been overtaken as the box office king by another James Cameron film, Avatar.  Maybe this re-release will be enough to push it back up to its rightful place as king of the world.
