‘Limitless’ For A Week
With the upcoming release of ‘Limitless’ starring Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro, we began to wonder if there are any ways we could improve our daily lives through chemistry.
Limitless is an intense thriller about a writer whose life is transformed by a smart drug that allows him to use 100% of his brain and become a perfect version of himself. His enhanced abilities soon attract shadowy forces that threaten his new life in this darkly comic and provocative film. Our own experiment in trying to mimic limitless yielded some shadowy results as well.
‘Cognitive Enhancement’ refers to the use of attention- or memory-boosting prescription drugs, such as Adderall, Ritalin and modafinil (Provigil), along with other performance-raising medications. Students have been doing it for years. About 7% of U.S. university students report having taken stimulants “nonmedically” at least once, according to a 2005 study of nearly 11,000 students. On some campuses — primarily private, élite schools — a full quarter of students admit to nonmedical drug use in the past year, mainly in an attempt to improve grades.
The benefits of enhancement are greater levels of alertness and focus and improvement in some types of memory. Research demonstrates stimulants consistently and significantly improve learning of material that must be recalled days later — exactly what you want from a drug when you are prepping for exams.
So what did we see:
Cognitive Enhancement Day 1:
Getting out of bed in the morning is often hardest for me. I have had a watershed of tragedy in last few years and so my doctor has prescribed Adderall as part of the healing process. First impression – it energizes me into movement and focusing.
Did work but already the dosage is ineffective and I had to put in a message to my doctor to increase the dose. Current dosage 20 mg.
Amazing! Keeps me focused and gives me energy. Only downfall isto eat and making time to eat because it suppresses your appetite so much. Watch how much you take because your body gets used to it and you hit a plateau so your dosage has to be increased. I was diagnosed with ADHD so this just streamlined my energy levels instead of having high highs and low lows. Can cause insomnia but again watch dosage and never take more than you need.
It helps the cognitive sensory receptors in the brain, slows down my thoughts, along with bringing ‘clarity’ to my thoughts and decisions during Fibro Fog. People without Adult ADD will experience a speed effect, however, it calms my thought process down.
Forgot to eat again!
Noticing dandruff, and and weird cysts that I cannot stop picking.
Starving and covered with picked over acne scabs – funny, this does not seem like something that would happen to Bradley Cooper. I think it is time to end the experiment and just watch the movie.
Editor’s Note: We do not condone any sort of abuse of prescription medication.
