The star-system was pronounced dead by almost everyone, but as of the moment of writing everyone is talking about Liza Minnelli in Cabaret and she made the covers of Time and Newsweek simultaneously. Contrast the …

Golden Globes Wrap

Submitted by admin on January 12, 2009 – 2:46 pmNo Comment

Tipsier, blowsier and
with more cleavage than the Oscars, the 65-year-old Golden Globe awards went on
with its show last night. The telecast faced tight competition from Jack Bauer
and the ladies of Wisteria Lane. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association
ceremony is best known as the group unhampered by having to decide whether
comedy or tragedy is better—or (more specifically) whether Sally Hawkins was a
better actress than Kate Winslet in 2008.

The Golden Globes get to
have it both ways, and for that they lack a certain drama. And a new generation
needs to be reminded that this was the group that gave Pia Zadora “The Best New
Star of the Year Award,” an all-important fact missing from the award’s
Wikipedia listing of winners in that category.

Danny Boyle got best
director for Slumdog Millionaire
,
which also won Best Drama and Best Screenplay, Mickey Rourke landed Best Actor
in a drama for The Wrestler
. Winslet
won for Best Actress as the desperate housewife  in Revolutionary Road
; Vicki Cristina Barcelona landed Best Musical or Comedy, just as In Bruges got Colin Farrell for Best Actor in a Musical
Comedy.

Heath Ledger posthumously
received the award for Best Supporting Actor Who Happened to Be on the Damn
Movie Poster. Similarly, Winslet took Best Supporting Actress in The Reader
, a movie with apparently no female lead performance
in it.

In the “No, duh?”
category: WALL-E
for Best
Animated Feature, and Mad Men
for Best Television Drama. And Tina Fey won the best Tina Fey award for Best
Tina Fey in 30 Rock Starring Tina Fey
.
