He has made a name for himself as the king of independent cinema, a genre he rules with an iron fist. Born in London, England to immigrant parents from Kolkata India Samrat was a star from a young age. He was known to light up the stage of Indian community functions in Boston, MA, where he was exposed to music, poetry and the plays of Rabindranath Tagore. A fan of films like E.T. and Star Wars, Samrat cites watching Bollywood icon Amitab Bachan’s Namak Halal at the age of seven as the first time he saw someone who looked like him on screen. This planted the dream that one day, Samrat Chakrabarti would also be a screen actor. Having acted all through school, Chakrabarti's feature film debut came in 2004 in Spike Lee's She Hate Me. Early in his career, he starred opposite Molly Shannon in The Wedding Weekend.
