Poonam Dhillon is a noted Indian Hindi film, theatre and TV actress. She is most known for her 1979 hit film, Noorie, and Sohni Mahiwal (1984), Samundar Saveray Wali Gaadi (1986) and Naam (1986) and for her six hit films with Rajesh Khanna(from 1980–87). Born 18 April 1962 in Kanpur, India in Punjabi Jatt Sikh family. Her father Amrik Singh, an aeronautical engineer in the Indian Armed Forces and her mother is Gurcharan Kaur, Poonam Dhillon did her schooling from Carmel Convent High School, Chandigarh & further education from Panjab University, Chandigarh, India.. Poonam learnt about theatre from Balwant Gargi She first gained fame when she was crowned Miss Young India at 16. Famous director Yash Chopra noticed her and gave her a romantic role in the star-studded hit film Trishul (1978) where the famous song "Gapoochi Gapoochi gum gum" was picturized on her with co-star Sachin Pilgaonkar. Enthralled by her performance, Yash Chopra gave her the title role in Noorie (1979), which he produced. The film became a major hit and Poonam was nominated for Filmfare Award for Best Actress. It also catapulted her to the ranks of upcoming heroines in the late seventies and early eighties.
