Growing up in Toronto, director Mark Palansky studied fine arts and philosophy before getting his start in the film industry working under director Michael Bay. After making two short films, Palansky served as an assistant on Bay’s big budget action films Pearl Harbor and Armageddon. He then worked as a second unit director on The Island and The Amityville Horror. Palansky made his big screen directing debut with the modern day fairytale film Penelope (2006). Starring Christina Ricci and James McAvoy, the film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and was screened at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival.
