Justine Waddell (born 4 November 1976) is a South African-born actress known for her role as Tess Durbeyfield in the 1998 television adaptation of Thomas Hardy's Tess of the d'Urbervilles and for her role in the BBC television serial, Wives and Daughters. She has also appeared in various theatrical productions such as the 1997 London stage production of Anton Chekhov's Ivanov. Waddell was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. Her mother, Kathy (née Gallagher), is a South African-born fashion designer who also operated a small shop in Soweto. Her father, Gordon H. Waddell, is a Scottish-born progressive Member of Parliament, director of Anglo American PLC, and a former captain of the Scottish rugby team. Waddell moved with her family to Scotland when she was eleven. Some four years later they moved to London. She is the only member of her family to take up a career in acting. She read Social and Political Science at Emmanuel College, Cambridge who allowed her to take time off from her studies to pursue her career.
