Jeremy Podeswa is an openly gay television and film director. Born in Canada, he graduated from the American Film Institute's Center for Advanced Film Studies in Los Angeles in 1984. After helming a number of Canadian projects, he directed Eclipse in 1994, about the intersecting lives of a group of characters preceding a solar eclipse. Eclipse was nominated for two Genie Awards and was screened at the Sundance, Toronto and Berlin Film Festivals. Podeswa gained notoriety as the writer and director for the critically acclaimed indie film The Five Senses (1999). The Five Senses premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and went on to win awards for Best Feature Film at the 1999 Toronto International Film Festival, Best Achievement in Direction at the 2000 Genie Awards, along with a nomination for the Grand Prix at the 2000 Paris Film Festival. The film revolved around a group Toronto neighbors whose relationships embody the five senses. He has also directed music videos, performing-arts specials and many popular episodic television dramas. Podeswa’s television credits include episodes of HBO series’ Six Feet Under (2001), Carnivàle (2003), Into the West (2005), Rome (2005) and John from Cincinnati (2007). He has also directed Showtime’s Queer as Folk (2001), The L Word (2005), Dexter (2007) and The Tudors (2008), along with F/X's Nip/Tuck (2005) and The Riches (2007). In 2007 he directed the film Fugitive Pieces, which opened the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival. Based on a novel by Anne Michaels, the film is the coming of age story about a Polish boy who, after escaping the Nazis, meets an archaeologist who brings him to Greece and Canada.
