Faye Wong (王菲) (born August 8, 1969) is a Chinese singer-songwriter and actress. An immensely popular icon, she is often referred to as a diva (Chinese: 天后; Mandarin Pinyin: tiānhòu; Jyutping: tinhau; literally "Heavenly Queen"). Famous for being effortlessly "cool", Wong is widely idolized for her independent spirits. Originally from Beijing, Wong started her singing career in Hong Kong in 1989, rising to fame with her Cantonese ballads. Since 1995 her recordings have mainly been in her native Mandarin, with occasional songs in English -such as the Final Fantasy VIII theme "Eyes on Me"- and Japanese. Enjoying a huge fanbase in Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, and even Japan, she was recognized by Guinness World Records in 2000 as the Best Selling Canto-Pop Female. In the West she is probably best known for her few acting stints, such as her award-winning performance in Chungking Express. Born in Beijing, People's Republic of China, she was originally named Xia Lin, adopting her mother's surname because her paternal family was persecuted during the Cultural Revolution. At the age of 15, several years after the turmoil ended, her name was changed to Wang Fei
